It has been estimated that in order to protect public health, meet European standards on water quality and respond to increasing demand sustained investment in water and sewerage infrastructure of around £3 billion will be required over the next 20 years.
In the period 2007 to 2010 NI Water plans to spend £778 million on the first tranche of this expenditure.

This Section provides information about individual water and wastewater improvement schemes either already under construction in the 2008/09 financial year or scheduled to start in the 2009/10 or 20010/11 financial years within each local Council area as part of this three year development programme.
A number of the schemes listed are component parts of two larger projects announced recently – the Belfast Sewers Project (£100 million) and the Water Mains Project (£80 million).
Collectively, all of these projects will provide NI Water customers throughout Northern Ireland with a water and sewerage infrastructure capable of meeting the demands of the 21st century.
(Please note that information on schemes in individual Council areas will not be published until after it has been presented to the relevant Council.)
