Domestic Billing Proposals

The introduction of domestic water and sewerage charges is a matter for the NI Assembly – not NI Water.

In May 2007 the Assembly deferred the introduction of domestic charges pending the outcome of an Independent Review set up to examine the arrangements for the delivery of water and sewerage services in NI – including funding.

The Review completed its work in January 2008 and the Executive is committed to consulting separately on any decisions it takes on the Review’s recommendations. For 2009/10, the Executive has decided to defer the introduction of additional household payments for water and sewerage services – meaning that charges will not now be introduced on 1 April 2009.

That said, on 28th April 2009 Regional Development Minister Conor Murphy revealed that he had asked his Executive colleagues to back a further two-year deferment, until at least 2012, with the option of continuing the extension again at a later date.

As soon as it becomes available, the Executive decision on this matter will be published on this website.
