Update - Essential Sewer Improvement Scheme in Lisburn

Work is now well underway on an essential programme of work to upgrade the City of Lisburn’s sewerage system. Work will entail construction work at various isolated locations throughout the city centre and the wider area, as well as major sewer laying work on Linenhall Street and Antrim Road / Westbourne Terrace / Antrim Street. It is anticipated that this work will be completed by Autumn 2015.Work is currently underway along Linenhall Street, where a new sewer is being laid. It is expected that this section of work will be completed during April 2015.
The temporary closure of both lanes of Linenhall Street, in the area of its junction with Hill Street, will be required for a period towards the end of February / beginning of March to enable the route of the new sewer to follow the other side of the road and to connect in existing branch sewers. During this time, vehicular access to the Laganbank Road car park will be maintained via Hill Street, as will vehicular access to premises outside the immediate working area, including the Health Centre.
Sewer laying along Antrim Road / Westbourne Terrace and Antrim Street and work close to the entrance to the McKeown Street Carpark is scheduled to start at the end of June and continue through July and August 2015.
Mark Sefton, NI Water’s Project Manager said:
“As with all work of this nature there will be an element of disruption, but NI Water and our contractor BSG Civil Engineering will do everything we can to keep any disruption to a minimum. Traffic management and signage will be in place as the scheme progresses.
“When complete, this programme of work will protect the quality and appearance of one of the city’s greatest natural assets, the River Lagan, to present day standards as well as catering for future housing and commercial development in the Lisburn area.”
The overall programme of work represents an overall investment of £4.1 million. Phase 1 of the programme represented a £2.9 million investment to replace a pumping station at Drumbeg Drive, Old Warren, which was completed in October 2014. The current programme of work is an investment of approximately £1.2 million to improve the sewerage infrastructure in the local area.
The working areas will have warning signs and temporary barriers erected to protect the public from hazards. The public are advised to stay out of these working areas for their own safety and NI Water would appeal for the support of parents to keep children and young people safe by explaining to them the dangers of playing in or around construction sites. Playing near our works areas can have dangerous consequences and we would like to spread this safety message throughout the area while we complete this programme of work.
