WaterAid

WaterAid is an international non governmental organisation dedicated exclusively to the provision of safe domestic water, sanitation and hygiene education to the world’s poorest people.

These most basic services are essential to life; without them vulnerable communities are trapped in the stranglehold of disease and poverty. WaterAid works by helping local organisations set up low cost, sustainable projects using appropriate technology that can be managed by the community itself.

Northern Ireland Water and WaterAid
Northern Ireland Water is committed to and is actively involved in supporting the work of WaterAid through fundraising, sponsorship and promotion. Such efforts are co-ordinated through the WaterAid Northern Ireland Committee comprising Northern Ireland Water staff and external professional bodies.

Northern Ireland Water helps to raise funds by:

  • Give as you earn (GAYE) or payroll giving
  • Special Events, including participation in the Belfast Marathon, sponsored walks/climbs, nights at the races, fishing competitions, golf tournaments etc.
  • Individual Donations are usually single one-off contributions or bequests from friends of the charity or groups such as Rotary or Lions.

The NI Committee now raises around £100,000 p.a. for WaterAid.

- The resulting illnesses kill a child every 15 seconds, which amounts to almost 6,000 deaths a day

- Households in rural Africa spend more than four hours a day fetching Water

- At any one time, more than half of the poor people in developing countries are ill from diseases caused by poor hygiene, sanitation and water supply.*
