Water Supply

Application for a New water Connection

Approval for connection
We will advise you of our decision to permit you to connect to a watermain within 14 days from the date of your application.

Where we approve your application, we will advise you of any related costs or charges you will have to pay and any conditions which you will need to comply with.  In some situations we can only issue a ‘conditional approval’. This will explain the conditions you are required to comply with to obtain final approval for connection.

It is illegal for anyone other than Northern Ireland Water or an authorised contractor to make a connection to a watermain.  In both instances work must not start until the appropriate charge has been paid and any conditions complied with.

Once you have completed all necessary work to the correct standard, we will connect you to the water supply system - normally within 21 days.

What if there is no existing watermain?
You can request a new main, either on your own or with your neighbours. The new main must serve two or more properties. We will provide a new main where the financial and operational conditions are met. For more information on requesting a new main click here.

We will advise you of our decision on whether or not we will provide a new watermain within two months from the date of your application.

Where we have agreed to provide a new watermain, the new main must be available for your use within 3 months of the day the financial conditions are met and/or the day on which the connection details are agreed. The availability date of the requisitioned water main may be extended by agreement, as some of the major schemes require longer than 3 months to deliver. If we do not deliver at the time agreed, you are entitled to interest payment on the amount you have pre-paid to us, for every 3 months during which we hold it.
