'Water' way to Have Fun in the Sun

23 June 2010 9:33

Marcie and Kitty Weatherup
One thing in Northern Ireland we can all agree on is the weather. It inspires us to dust off the garden furniture and start ‘having fun in the sun’.

This can mean filling up the kid’s paddling pool, attending to the garden or simply running the tap to get a cold glass of water. One thing we all have in common is that we rarely think about how much water we are actually wasting. Therefore, NI Water is urging customers to adopt simple ways in which they can help save water around the home and garden.

NI Water’s Head of Water Supply, Charlie Gallagher, explains:

“NI Water takes pride in delivering one of Northern Ireland’s most essential services and last year delivered over 632 million litres of water to customers.

“NI Water continually monitors levels in reservoirs and tries to take steps to maximise water storage. However, we need our customers to be ‘water wise’ and realise the importance of conserving water. The public can play a part by reducing demand for water and avoiding wastage by following some of NI Water’s helpful tips:

· Using the water from the kids paddling pool to water plants;

· Using watering cans around the garden instead of hosepipes and sprinklers;

· Filling a jug of water and placing it in the fridge to cool

· Using buckets to wash the car instead of a hosepipe;

· Not leaving taps running longer than necessary, for example when brushing teeth or washing vegetables; and

· Mend leaking taps - taps that drip once a second, result in the loss of 33 litres of water a day.

If you would like to assess your own water usage, please fill out NI Water’s Home Water Audit by logging onto http://www.niwater.com/informationleaflets.asp and click on the leaflet ‘Home Water Audit’.

Reports of any wastage of water or leaks should be referred to Leakline 0800 282011 or Waterline 08457 440088.
