Shakin' It Up With The Over 60's

To mark Older People’s Day on 1 October, 2010, which has the theme ‘getting and staying active in later life’ NI Water’s education team joined a local fitness class at Olympia Leisure Centre especially tailored for the over 60 age group.
By 2010, half the population of the UK will be aged 50 and over. NI Water has a range of initiatives to support this group, including highlighting the importance of water as part of a healthy lifestyle.
Good hydration in older people increases levels of tissue oxygen and enhances ulcer healing, helps maintain a healthy urinary tract and kidneys and can help against blood clot formation.
Jane Jackson, Education Manager, NI Water, explained:
“NI Water is delighted to be involved in promoting services to older people in Northern Ireland. Our Water for Health programme complements this year’s theme of ‘getting and staying active in later life’. The programme is designed to raise awareness of the importance of drinking water as part of a healthy lifestyle.
“We had a chat to the group about the need to stay hydrated particularly when exercising and distributed 100 drinking water bottles. These were a welcome gift as the exercise class got underway!”
NI Water has a range of initiatives which are particularly important to this age group, including a new Customer Care Register which will capture vital details of people with medical conditions, disabilities or special needs. We would encourage the public to phone our Waterline number on 08457 440088 to find out more about these services.
NI Water’s Education team provide a programme of events and activities for the public all over Northern Ireland. The team travels to schools, youth groups and community groups and also participates in a number of major shows and events throughout the year.
