Vandalism at Sullatober Water Treatment Works poses serious risks

04 October 2010 15:29

NI Water has raised serious concerns about recent vandalism at Sullatober Water Treatment Works (WTW) in Carrickfergus.

The Works, which is currently decommissioned, was broken into by the removal of a chain and padlock which had been cut from the gate.

Area Supply Manager, Maynard Cousley comments,

“NI Water would like to stress that this is a serious problem that poses very dangerous health and safety risks, not only to those carrying out the break-ins, but also to the general public.

“Staff found a number of metal lids from chambers missing. As the site is decommissioned, if someone had fallen into these tanks or injured themselves, they would not be found quickly and we could potentially be looking at serious injury or even worse. We would appeal to those involved to think about their behaviour and stop immediately.”

The cost of repairing the damage is also a factor. This work creates a needless drain on extremely limited resources.

NI Water needs the help and support of the whole community to protect these vital resources and is calling on those engaging in these acts to cease immediately.

To report an incident at any NI Water site, please phone Waterline on 08457 440088.
