Armagh Sewerage Improvement Scheme – Railway Street / Lonsdale Road

23 January 2017 12:32

NI Water is currently continuing work on a major project to improve the sewerage network in Armagh.

Construction work commenced on Railway Street on 17th October 2016, however it was not possible to complete the work before Georgian Day and the subsequent busy Christmas period due to the number of existing services present.

In consultation with Transport NI, work on Lower English street was suspended on 25th November and will re-commence on 23rd  January 2017. We anticipate the this remaining section of work will take approximately 1 week to complete.

Public safety is a high priority for NI Water, and in order for these works to be undertaken safely and protect the safety of the public, road users and construction workers it will be necessary to implement temporary traffic arrangements.

These arrangements have been discussed with Transport NI and to facilitate this major sewer connection it will be necessary to have a temporary road closure on part of Railway Street (Shambles roundabout bound), traffic will be diverted via Lonsdale Street, College Street, Upper English Street and Lower English Street. During this time there will be no right turn off Railway Street on to Lower English Street. Country bound traffic from the Shambles will be diverted via Banbrook Hill. The Banbrook Hill one-way system will again be reversed during these works. Local access for residents and businesses will continue.

It will also be necessary to prohibit parking along a section of Railway Street during this time; the parking areas affected will be coned off. Residential, Nursery School and business access may be restricted during the works; pedestrian access will be maintained at all times. We will endeavour to reduce the impact where possible and continue to liaise with relevant businesses and residents as the works progress.

The road closure will be in place from 7.00am on Monday 23rd January to 7.00pm on Friday 27th  January 2017. Working hours will generally be 7.00am to 7.00pm, however it may be necessary for some work to be completed outside of these hours.

Please be aware that construction sites are dangerous areas for unauthorised persons, especially children, and we would appreciate your co-operation in ensuring that children do not play in or around the site or machinery. Working areas will have warning signs in place to protect the public from any hazards. The public are advised to stay out of these working areas for their own safety.

NI Water and our contractor, BSG Civil Engineering Ltd, would like to thank the public and local businesses for their continued patience and cooperation as we complete these essential improvement works. We will do everything we can to complete the work as quickly as soon as possible with minimal disruption.
