NI Water is pleased to announce that an extensive £1.2 million programme of improvements is now underway at Bridge Street Wastewater Pumping Station, located off O’Nolan Park in Strabane.

The project will involve the construction of a modern new pumping station to replace the existing station, which is now over 40 years old. All the new tanks will be below ground and the old concrete building which is currently on site will be demolished and replaced with a smaller structure.

The new pumping station will be equipped with new pumps, a new control panel and will have additional storage capacity to help reduce the risk of flooding and cater for future development. The scheme will also improve the water quality in the local River Mourne, with additional screening installed to improve the quality of any flows that may discharge to the river. It is anticipated that all work will be completed by Autumn 2017.

Catherine Watkins, NI Water’s Project Manager for the scheme, commented:

“This is an important scheme for the Strabane area, which will enhance the local sewerage infrastructure for customers in the area. The new Pumping Station will also reduce the risk of flooding incidents.

“NI Water and our contracting team - Dawson WAM and RPS would like to thank the community for their patience and cooperation while we complete this essential improvement work which will benefit the local area.

“There may be increased construction traffic to the site through the O’Nolan Park access point, however we will do everything possible to minimise disruption at all times.”

Mayor of Derry & Strabane, Councillor Maolíosa McHugh added:

“The council welcome this major investment to modernise the existing Bridge Street Wastewater Pumping Station, which will improve services for customers, as well as accommodating future growth and development in the area.”
