Ormeau Avenue Sewerage Improvement Work Continues

09 April 2019 16:21

Work is progressing well on this major £5 million project to improve the sewerage infrastructure in the Ormeau area, which includes work around Ormeau Avenue, Dublin Road, Bruce Street, Sandy Row, Sandy Row and sections of the lower Ormeau Road.

Ormeau Avenue

Pipe laying works will commence between Linenhall Street and Bedford Street on Wednesday 10th April and we anticipate this work will take approximately 2 weeks to complete. In order to undertake the works safely and maintain traffic flows, there will be no access to Bedford Street, for city bound traffic from Ormeau Avenue during this time; traffic will be diverted onto the Dublin Road.

Hope Street / Sandy Row / Durham Street

Pipe laying works will commence around the Hope Street / Sandy Row / Durham Street junction on Friday 12th April, and we anticipate will take approximately 2 weeks to complete. In order to maintain traffic flows around a very busy junction a 4-way stop/go system will be in operation at all times. Access to Hope Street from Great Victoria Street will be re-opened during these works.

When complete, this investment will significantly reduce the risk of out of sewer flooding in this area of Belfast during periods of heavy rainfall. Environmental pollution will also be reduced, and the water quality in the Blackstaff Culvert and River Lagan will be enhanced.

NI Water would like to thank the public for their ongoing patience and cooperation during the completion of this essential improvement work. We assure you that we will do everything that we can to keep all disruption to a minimum.

ENDS.
