NI Water & Local Council Appeal to only Flush 3P’s

NI Water has joined forces with Fermanagh and Omagh District Council to ask customers to only flush the 3P’s, Pee, Poo and Paper following the discovery of wipes and other unflushables in Lough Erne.

NI Water’s Head of Environmental Regulation, Angela Halpenny explains, “NI Water fights a daily battle with blocked sewers and out of sewer flooding when people flush inappropriate items such as baby wipes, cotton buds and sanitary products. Recently these items have been found in Lough Erne.

“Blockages and subsequent spills such as these are completely avoidable if everyone would adopt a simple habit of binning everything other than the 3P’s, pee, poo and paper.”

Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Siobhán Currie, said:

“On behalf of the Council, I am delighted to offer my support to NI Water’s 3 P’s campaign. NI Water has responsibility for the sewerage system but we are all responsible for what we flush and the impact this can have on the environment. At this particularly challenging and difficult time when more of us are staying at home, and when all frontline services are already under significant additional pressure, we can do our bit to help keep the sewerage system flowing freely by adhering to NI Water’s advice with regard to the 3P’s by remembering to bin it don’t flush it.”

Angela concludes, “We have all seen the disgusting effects of an overflowing manhole in the street or worse, an overflowing toilet in a home. In the last ten years, we have spent over £1.5 billion investing in water and wastewater infrastructure but no amount of investment will completely stop blocked pipes if people continue to flush wipes (including flushable), sanitary items and cotton buds down the toilet.”
