Advice to the public – Algae Bloom at Lough Mourne Reservoir, Carrickfergus

01 July 2020 14:26

NI Water has become aware that there is an issue with algae bloom at Lough Mourne Reservoir. Signage has been erected around the reservoir to make the public aware of the presence of this algae. Lough Mourne Reservoir is a popular recreational area and is used for angling by licence through DAERA. Customer supplies and drinking water quality are not impacted.

You can’t tell if an algal bloom in the water is toxic just by looking at it, so it’s best to assume that it is harmful and take the following precautions:-

  • Do not swim in the water
  • Do not swallow the water
  • Avoid contact with the water or algae
  • Do not eat fish caught from the water
  • Pet owners should ensure that their animals do not have access to the water or drink the water.
  • Observe and abide by any warning notices positioned around the water
