NI Water is undertaking a groundbreaking concept in the development of clean energy which could help kick start the hydrogen economy in Northern Ireland. The company was awarded £5m of funding from the Department for the Economy (DfE) to undertake an innovative Oxygen and Hydrogen Demonstrator Project that will deploy a state-of-the-art, 1 Megawatt (MW) electrolyser at one of its major Wastewater Treatment Works in Belfast.
The purpose of the electrolyser is to demonstrate how electrolysis (a process which splits water using electricity to produce hydrogen and oxygen) could utilise oxygen to its advantage in wastewater and also produce green hydrogen by harnessing renewable electricity.
