Sewerage Improvement Work Continues in Armagh City

Work is currently progressing on NI Water’s £3 million programme of work to improve the sewerage network in Armagh.

The section of work on Mall West, Barrack Street and Scotch Street has now been completed. Work has started along Mall East, progressing towards Gaol Square and is expected to take six weeks to complete. Working hours will generally be Monday to Friday 8.00am to 5.00pm and Saturday 8.00am to 1.00pm.

Detailed traffic management arrangements have been discussed and agreed with Transport NI to try and minimise disruption to residents, business and road users. The first phase of this work will maintain two-way traffic, however in order to carry out the work safely, it will be necessary to prohibit parking along Mall East. These parking areas will be coned and the restrictions monitored by the PSNI. Residential and business access may be restricted during the works. We will endeavour to reduce the impact where possible and continue to liaise with relevant businesses/residents as the works progress.

The second phase will require a south bound lane closure on Mall East and a road closure on Gaol Square with traffic restrictions/diversions. The diversion routes will be signposted but delays should be expected.

NI Water appreciates that work of this nature can be unavoidably disruptive at certain locations, particularly where traffic diversions are required.  Alongside our appointed contractor, BSG Civil Engineering Ltd, we will work closely with Transport NI and other key stakeholders to minimise inconvenience and disruption to local residents, businesses and road users as far as practicably possible.

Once complete, the scheme will meet Northern Ireland Environment Agency standards, reduce the risk of ‘out of sewer’ flooding and facilitate future development within Armagh City for the next 30 years by improving and increasing the capacity of the sewerage infrastructure.
