Wet Summer to Blame For Drop in Recommended Beaches

22 May 2009 13:50
With this year’s summer already off to a wet start, the impact from last year’s downpours is still being felt with a drop in Northern Ireland beaches receiving recommendation in the Marine Conservation Society’s (MCS) Good Beach Guide 2009.

Across the UK there was a 16.5% drop in the number of bathing beaches recommended for excellent water quality – the biggest fall in the guide’s 22 year history. Testing took place between May and September 2008, which coincided with an extremely wet summer, including the exceptional rainfall in August that lead to widespread flooding across Northern Ireland.
