NI Water is dealing with interruptions to water supplies across a large number of areas in the province as a result of the severe weather and on-going thaw.
There has been a slight reduction in the number of properties with no water -down from 42,000 customers yesterday to 36,000 customers today. In all, over 95% of customers are on supply.
NI Water has increased the supply of water to customers to the highest level ever, increasing from 600million litres per day to 850 million litres per day (an increase of over 40% than normal).
Customers should refer to the NI Water website www.niwater.com, to NI Direct, www.nidirect.gov.uk, local Council websites and Ceefax Page 169 for details of areas affected and for further information on the locations for alternative water supplies. Areas to be affected and times when water supply will be taken off and returned will be available on the website later this afternoon. It is anticipated that this interruption will only last a number of hours (approx 6-8) and water will then be restored to customers in a timely manner.
This information will be updated regularly and is dependant on reservoir levels.
Also available on the website is a list of other areas which may experience some interruptions due to low reservoir levels.
A full list of alternative water supplies is also available on the website.
CUSTOMERS COLLECTING WATER NEED TO BRING THEIR OWN CONTAINERS, AND BOIL IT BEFORE USE.
There does, however, remain an exceedingly high level of demand on our reservoirs which remain at low levels. THIS IS DUE TO THE HIGH NUMBER OF BURST PIPES ON PRIVATE AND COMMERICIAL PROPERTIES
NI Water staff are actively searching for leaks on the mains supply. During this work, they are identifying a number of private properties where leakage is occurring. They have isolated and shut these private leaks off.
NI Water is strongly urging the public to:
·check their properties for burst pipes. If there is a burst on your property, isolate and repair it as quickly as possible. These private bursts are causing considerable strain on the system and
·conserve their use of water during this period of disruption in order to allow us to fully recharge our water network. This will allow us to maximize the quantity of water available to all our customers across the province. For example, do not wash your car or hose your property for the next few days.
Due to the unprecedented high volume of calls, a number of customers have experienced a longer waiting time than usual when calling our Waterline number. The phones are fully staffed and operating to full capacity.
NI Water would like to thank our customers for their patience while we answer their calls and work to restore full supplies.
