Beechmount Ave & Falls Rd Sewer Improvement Scheme

23 May 2011 14:46
NI Water is pleased to announce that it will soon commence a sewer improvement scheme in the Beechmount Avenue & Falls Road areas. The work, which represents an investment of £850,000 by NI Water, will upgrade the current sewers in the area to meet current and future development needs and will reduce the risk of out of sewer flooding.

NI Water’s Project Manager for the scheme, Keith Haslett, explains:

“The current sewerage infrastructure in these areas is in poor structural condition and needs to be upgraded. This is good news for the local community as this essential improvement work will improve the local infrastructure, reduce the risk of out-of sewer flooding and meet Northern Ireland Environment Agency standards.

“It is hoped the work will get underway at Beechmount Avenue on the 23rd May 2011 and is scheduled to last 12 weeks. It is anticipated that Work will continue in August 2011 on the small section around the Beechmount Avenue/ Falls Road junction for a period of 4 weeks. The entire programme of work will be complete in November 2011.

“The majority of the work will take place within Beechmount Avenue, running from Oakman Street to 40 metres before the Falls Road junction. Unfortunately, with all work of this nature, there will be an element of disruption and a road closure will be required on Beechmount Avenue to complete this essential work safely. Alternative routes will be signposted and access will be maintained for residents in the area.

“Sewer upgrade work will also take place in Fort Street, Gortfin Street, La Salle and the Falls Road during this period.”

The work has been welcomed by the local community safety group. Mary McLoughlin from the group comments:

“NI Water has consulted with us throughout the planning of this work and has taken on board our concerns regarding disruption. We will be actively involved in the communication of the work for local residents and welcome it. The project team have promised to do everything they can to complete this work as quickly as possible, with minimum disruption. The team are also aware of the West Belfast Festival from the 28th July to the 7th August, and do not intend to work on the main roads of Beechmount Avenue and the Falls Road during this period.

“We would encourage residents to come along to a public consultation being held on Wednesday 18th May at St Paul’s parish hall from 4-7pm.

“This investment is great news for the local area and we would urge residents to co operate with NI Water while this essential work is carried out.”

NI Water’s contractor for this project is Consent Solutions. They have extensive experience in this type of sewer improvement work throughout Belfast.

NI Water will keep the local community and elected representatives informed of any developments during this scheme, and would like to thank them in advance for their patience and co-operation during this vital improvement work.
