Dungiven WwTW has been upgraded and improved through a £2.8m renovation programme. This upgrade involved upgrading the existing treatment processes and facilities at Dungiven which will enhance the service provision in the area, allowing for future growth and development. In addition, the scheme will improve the water quality discharged to the River Roe.
£1 million was also invested to construct a new Wastewater Treatment Works for the Foreglen area (Ballymonie WwTW). This project will also deliver significant improvements to wastewater services in the area and will increase capacity, ensuring that the Works complies with new NIEA and EU regulations.
Michael McAlary NI Water Wastewater Services Manager for the area said:
“In today’s economic climate Northern Ireland Water are looking at ways of reducing our whole life-time costs and at the same time having to meet the ever tighter environment consent standards. The completion of the construction works at Foreglen and Dungiven Waste Water Treatment Works will bring significant benefits to wastewater services for ourselves and our customers and will allow for future growth in the Dungiven area.”
The Mayor of Limavady Cllr Sean McGlinchey also commented on the completion of the sites:
“The council welcomes the completion of these two treatment works which will benefit the local area ensuring that residential growth and development can be met well into the 21st century.”
The improvements at Foreglen and Dungiven WwTW are example of the scale of investment required to improve wastewater services, meet European standards, respond to increasing demand and provide customers across Northern Ireland with a modern service.
BSG Civil Engineering & Williams Industrial Services JV were the contractors on Dungiven WwTW and Biwater Graham was the contractor on Ballymonie WwTW.
