Northern Ireland Beaches Improve - Good Beach Guide 2012

03 May 2012 16:31
NI Water has welcomed news from the Marine Conservation Society’s (MCS) Good Beach Guide 2012, that 16 beaches out of the 24 tested in Northern Ireland have been recommended for excellent water quality.

Commenting on the MCS guide, Angela Halpenny, Head of Environmental Regulation at Northern Ireland Water commented:

“NI Water has invested heavily in terms of time and money in our wastewater network. We are delighted to see the results of this work beginning to show in the increased quality of our bathing water.

“However, maintaining and improving on these results is a collective challenge and one which depends on all our partners and the public playing an active role.

“There are really simple actions we can all take to protect our beaches and our water quality. It is a common misconception that it is ok to flush wipes, cotton buds and sanitary items when in fact, sewerage systems are not designed to cope with them and they often end up creating an eyesore on our beaches. NI Water’s advice is to ‘Bag it and Bin it’ – don’t flush it.”
