NI Water is pleased to announce that phase 1 of a major Water Improvement Scheme, serving customers in Strabane Town and the surrounding local area, is complete. The scheme involved the realignment and improvement of an essential water trunk main representing an investment of £3m.

The Tullywhisker to Castletown Water Improvement Scheme/Trunk Main Realignment involved the replacement of a 1km section of water main, including drilling across the Cavanalee River, with a robust twin main to ensure additional resilience and security of the drinking water supply for customers.

Nigel Nevin, NI Water Senior Project Manager said:

“I am delighted that work has been successfully completed on this major £3m improvement scheme.   The new main will provide an essential water supply system for this part of County Tyrone, ensuring the ongoing provision of high-quality drinking water to our customers in Strabane and the surrounding area.

“This was a challenging project, due to the sensitive nature of the Cavanalee River as a spawning river. We take our environmental responsibilities seriously and opted to drill under the riverbed instead of damming the river, to dig an open cut trench to lay our pipe, in a bid to reduce disruption and minimise the risk of disturbing the river and its wildlife.

“I would like to thank our wider NI Water project team including contractor Farrans Glanua JV, as well as the local landowners and wider public for their support and co-operation in helping us progress the overall scheme.  We hope it will deliver a more resilient, improved water supply network and help safeguard the local drinking water supply for many years to come.”
