Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council’s waste operations team recently made a huge splash in combating single use plastics when 400 reusable drinking water bottles were delivered to their doorstep by NI Water’s Refillution campaign team.

Realising how much water they drink during their working hours, the team decided to sign up to NI Water’s Refillution Campaign and in doing so take the NI Water Plastic Promise Pledge to always refill from the tap and always use a reusable bottle.

Northern Ireland uses 145 million single use plastic bottles every year. By using a reusable water bottle everyone can play their part in reducing the amount of single use plastics which often end up polluting waterways and seas. Refilling a reusable bottle with tap water also helps drive down the carbon footprint, as bottled water is 900 times more carbon intensive than tap water.

Lord Mayor of ABC Borough, Ald Stephen Moutray said: “On a daily basis, our Environmental Services staff see the damage which single use plastics can cause, particularly in terms of littering, and they are delighted to play their part by taking up these reusable bottles, kindly supplied by NI Water. It is a clear demonstration of our commitment to the climate and sustainability.”

NI Water’s Head of Environmental Regulation Angela Halpenny said: “By joining the Refillution, ABC Council are really playing their part in tacking the problems single use plastics cause such as blocking up our drains and polluting rivers and oceans. By switching to a reusable bottle and always filling up from the tap they are making a positive contribution to reducing plastic waste and protecting nature.”

Councils, business and clubs across Northern Ireland can sign up to NI Water’s Refillution campaign by emailing education@niwater.com or find out more at www.niwater.com/refillution-join/
