An extensive programme of work is currently ongoing to improve the wastewater network in Annsborough and Castlewellan. This major investment will see the installation of new dedicated stormwater pipelines to remove rainwater from parts of the combined system. This will reduce the pressure on the existing network and help reduce the risk of out-of-sewer flooding. A series of localised sewer repairs, also included in the scheme, will address leakage and help protect against blockages.
Following completion of work in Lower Square and Clarmont Avenue around the end of August, the next phase of improvements will involve laying a section of new stormwater pipe, network connections and sewer repairs on Newcastle Road, between the junction of Church Field Heights and the mini roundabout at Main Street.
It is anticipated that this work will commence on Wednesday 3rd September (following some site investigation works to confirm ground conditions/location of services).
Pipelaying will commence adjacent to Church Field Heights and progress towards the roundabout at Main Street, where it will connect into the stormwater network already improved as part of this scheme. To carry out the work on Newcastle Road as safely as possible, a short lane closure will be implemented around the working area with temporary traffic lights in place to manage the flow of traffic. The traffic lights will be manned at peak times to reduce tailbacks and when possible, the traffic management will be removed at weekends.
The pipelaying and resurfacing works on Newcastle Road will take approximately 3 months to complete overall. Following this work, some repairs to the foul sewer network (relining works) may be carried out from existing manholes. This element of work will not require any additional excavations and only localised traffic management will be in place around manholes.
Access for residents and businesses will be maintained and our contractor BSG, will liaise with properties along the pipeline route regarding access.
NI Water and our project team from BSG and McAdam take this opportunity to thank the public for their patience and cooperation as we strive to improve the wastewater network serving Annsborough and Castlewellan. Every effort will be made to keep disruption to a minimum and complete each section of works in the shortest possible timeframe.
The team will provide updates regarding further sections of work in relation to the project
