From Monday 2nd June 2025, NI Water has outsourced the management of our hired standpipe process to Aquam Water Services. This change has streamlined the application and licensing process, making it more efficient and customer-friendly for those with a legitimate need to draw water from the public main using a standpipe.

From now on, all applications for new standpipe licences or renewals must be made through Aquam. Customers can apply directly via their website: https://www.aquamcorp.co.uk/standpipe-hire/niwater. A valid licence allows authorised users to temporarily draw water from hydrants, subject to any local restrictions. It's important to note that using an unlicensed standpipe is illegal and may lead to prosecution and fines of up to £1,000.

Introducing the New SMART Standpipes
We are rolling out new SMART standpipes, available in two sizes

63mm SMART Standpipe

25mm SMART Standpipe

These are now the only approved hire types for external users. All hired standpipes will be fitted with backflow prevention and SMART metering for improved compliance and monitoring.

Out with the Old: NIW Hired Standpipe
The previous NIW hired standpipe(s) are being phased out and replaced by the new SMART models.

Who Can Use Non-SMART Standpipes?

Outside of this rollout, the only users permitted to use non-SMART standpipes are:

  • NI Water operational staff
  • Fire Authority staff

All other users must use the new SMART standpipes issued via Aquam.

Why the Change?

Enhanced Customer Experience

    • One-stop shop for standpipe hire, licensing, delivery, and support.
    • Fast delivery (24–48 hours) and province-wide pick-up/return.
    • Dedicated customer care and easy online access.

Smart Technology & Real-Time Data

    • All standpipes feature smart meters and GPS for accurate, real-time usage data.
    • Online portal for applications, training, billing, and usage tracking.

Improved Water Quality & Network Protection

    • Certified CALM Network training for all users, reducing risk to water quality and infrastructure.
    • Smart tech helps prevent illegal use and supports leakage reduction.

Compliance, Safety & Efficiency

    • Only NI Water-approved standpipes with backflow prevention are permitted.
    • Using unlicensed standpipes is illegal and may result in fines up to £1,000.
    • Flexible licensing options (daily, monthly, annual) to suit your needs.

Unauthorised standpipe use "reporting"

You can report any suspected unauthorised standpipe connections by contacting Report Hydrant Misuse | Aquam Water Services.

It is an offence to take water from a hydrant by any means other than a licensed approved standpipe obtained from Aquam, on behalf of NI Water.
Those who have a legitimate need may obtain a portable standpipe for drawing water on a temporary basis from a fire hydrant on a public water main system.

Thank you for supporting this transition to ensure safer and more compliant use of our network.
