Sion Mills Wastewater Infrastructure Upgrades Underway

07 October 2025 15:30

NI Water has commenced a £500,000 programme of work to improve the wastewater infrastructure in Sion Mills.

The work involves the installation of a dedicated stormwater pipeline to remove storm (rain) water from the combined wastewater network. This investment will help to reduce the risk of out-of-sewer flooding in the area and provide some localised network capacity in the short term.

Speaking about the work and the traffic management required, Robert McLean, NI Water Senior Project Manager said: “The new pipeline is being installed within lands to the rear of house Nos. 104/106 Melmount Road, extending as far as Sion Mills Baptist Church and along The Willows. A section of the stormwater pipe will also be installed in the grass verge in front of No. 104 Melmount Road, which will connect to existing stormwater manholes in The Hawthorns and Daisy Park. Road crossings will be carried out using trenchless techniques where possible.

“To facilitate the section of pipelaying adjacent to Melmount Road, as well as the road crossings, a temporary lane closure will be required on Melmount Road between The Hawthorns and Daisy Park between the hours of 09:30 to 16:30 each day from Monday 13th October.

“Short lane closures will also be required within The Hawthorns and Daisy Park to facilitate connections to existing manholes. The work on the roads is expected to be completed by Friday 14th November 2025.

“During this time, we will do everything to minimise disruption and access will be maintained for residents and businesses, although parking within a working area may be temporarily restricted. Our contractor, AG Wilson will liaise with properties along the pipeline route with regards to access, parking, bin collections, deliveries etc.

“We would take this opportunity to highlight that construction sites are dangerous areas for unauthorised persons, especially children, and we would appreciate your co-operation in ensuring that children do not play in or around the site or machinery. Working areas will have warning signs in place to protect the public from any hazards. The public are advised to stay out of these working areas for their own safety.

“NI Water and our project team from AtkinsRéalis and AG Wilson thank residents, businesses and motorists for their patience and cooperation while we undertake this essential work to deliver environmental improvements and support new development. We assure you that we will strive to complete the work as quickly as possible and keep disruption to a minimum.”
