This Budget Day, NI Water is reminding households that using less hot water can help reduce energy use and save money.
Power is needed to heat water for showers, washing machines, dishwashers and kettles so small changes in how hot water is used can help lower household energy costs.
NI Water education officer Anna Killen said: “Hot water uses energy, and energy costs money. This Budget Day, we’re encouraging households to look at simple changes that can help reduce both water and energy use before winter bills arrive.
“Only boiling the water you need, choosing cooler washing-machine programmes, running dishwashers with a full load and reducing shower times to four minutes can all make a difference over time.
“Whether making a cuppa, doing the laundry, washing the dishes or taking a shower, using water wisely is a simple way to help the environment while keeping household costs down.”
Simple ways to save water and energy:
- Run washing machines and dishwashers only with a full load and choose cooler or eco programmes where suitable.
- Fill the kettle with only as much water as you need.
- Keep showers to four minutes.
- Choose a shower instead of a bath.
- Turn off the hot tap while washing, shaving etc.
- Fit a water-efficient shower head where appropriate.
