NI Water is set to begin an essential watermain upgrade on Racecourse Road, Ballyarnett (Derry/Londonderry) on Monday 27th July to improve the resilience of the local water supply network.

The work, which involves laying around 170 metres of new watermain between Carnhill Roundabout and Greenhaw Road, will replace a section of the 50-year-old Ballyarnett Water Trunkmain which has been prone to bursts. The upgrade will help to protect homes from flooding, should a burst occur in the future, and provide improved access for NI Water maintenance.

A lane closure controlled by temporary traffic lights will be in place on Racecourse Road around the working area from Monday 27th July for four weeks. A further two weeks of work will take place in the adjacent verge which will not require any traffic management.

Gary McFadden, NI Water Senior Project Manager, said: "This NI Water investment will replace a section of watermain that has caused problems in the past, helping to provide a more robust network to protect nearby homes and improve maintenance access.

"Temporary traffic lights will be manned during peak hours and access to properties will be maintained at all times, although parking spaces within the working area will be temporarily unavailable. Once the lane closure is removed, our team will move into the adjacent verge to complete the final phase of work.

"This work has been scheduled for the summer months to minimise disruption to school traffic, and the late July start date also avoids any impact on the Foyle Cup. Working hours will generally run from 7.30am to 5.00pm, Monday to Friday, with the possibility of extended hours to complete the work in a shorter timeframe.

"NI Water and our project team from McAdam and GRAHAM Construction thank residents and motorists for their patience and cooperation while this essential work is carried out."

The work in improving the Ballyarnett Trunk Main is just one element of a wider multi-million-pound investment currently ongoing by NI Water to provide a resilient water supply network in Derry city. The water infrastructure on Foyle Street was recently replaced as part of a £5m upgrade and a £2.5m project to replace and wrap watermains spanning the Craigavon Bridge is due for completion next month. Combined with ongoing base maintenance work at water pumping stations and treatment works, these investments highlight NI Water’s commitment to safeguard the provision of high quality drinking water to communities right across the city.
