NI Water’s education team is out on the road visiting summer schemes across Northern Ireland, helping children learn about the vital role water plays in our everyday lives.

The team was delighted to drop into Portadown Gets Active, which is a community programme that supports children and young people during the summer holidays. The initiative is aimed at promoting health, wellbeing and skill development, while helping to address challenges such as holiday hunger and limited access to activities.

During the visits, children and young people are discovering where our drinking water comes from and the impact inappropriate items in the sewer system have on our wastewater network and the environment. The visits also highlight the benefits of good hydration, particularly during the summer months, encouraging children to make water their drink of choice to stay healthy, energised and active. 

As part of the programme participants also receive a new reusable water bottle encouraging them to join the ‘Refillution’, which promotes refilling from the tap as a simple way to stay hydrated, reduce plastic waste and help protect the environment. 

Anna Killen, education officer, said: "It's fantastic to have the opportunity to visit local summer schemes and engage with children on topics that affect us all. Through fun activities and discussions, we're helping young people understand where their water comes from, how to use it wisely, the importance of staying hydrated and the positive impact they can have on the environment. The enthusiasm and knowledge shown by the children has been wonderful to see."
