Primary 2 pupils from Carnmoney Primary School, Glengormley have been helping NI Water celebrate Global Handwashing Day.
Celebrated each year on 15th October, Global Handwashing Day is a day to promote good hand hygiene and raise awareness of the difference something as simple as handwashing can make. The pupils discovered what NI Water does to make sure we always have a plentiful supply of clean, safe water in the taps to wash our hands, and were reminded how important handwashing is and how it can help us avoid getting sick and spreading germs.
Pupils also learnt about the work of the charity WaterAid, which works with communities around the world to provide safe clean water and make sure handwashing is something everyone, everywhere has access to.
Anna Killen, Outreach and Learning Officer at NI Water, said: “Washing our hands with soap and clean water is one of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent disease and save lives. But 1.7 billion people – one in five – still don’t have soap and/or water to wash their hands at home.
“WaterAid works with some of the poorest communities around the globe, to ensure everyone has access to clean water and handwashing facilities. It was great to celebrate with the pupils from Carnmoney Primary School the importance of clean water and the difference something as simple as handwashing can make.”
