NI Water is investing £2.5 million in a major upgrade at Cabragh Wastewater Treatment Works (WwTW), County Tyrone to enhance wastewater services, support future growth and provide greater protection for local waterways, particularly the River Blackwater.

The project will increase the treatment capacity of the existing works and help ensure it can meet current environmental standards while accommodating predicted population growth in Cabragh and the surrounding area.

The upgrade will install an additional wastewater treatment process on the site and associated new infrastructure. The improvements will help the site manage future wastewater flows more effectively while maintaining compliance with stringent Northern Ireland Environment Agency standards.

NI Water’s Senior Project Manager Michael Donnelly said:

"This £2.5 million investment demonstrates NI Water's commitment to providing modern, resilient wastewater infrastructure that meets the needs of local communities both now and in the future. The upgrade at Cabragh will support the ongoing development in the area while helping to protect the local environment and improve the local river water quality."

“The existing treatment works will operate as normal as the upgrade takes place, ensuring reduced disruption to our customers. There may be increased traffic in the area and we thank the local community for their patience and cooperation as the work progresses.”

The project team appreciates the co-operation of the wider public in ensuring that children do not play in or around any site or machinery. Working areas will have warning signs in place to protect the public from any hazards. The public are advised to stay out of these working areas for their own safety.

DLJ Water is the contractor for this major scheme, which includes Deane Public Works and Avove Ireland. Tetra Tech also form part of the project team.

The scheme aligns with NI Water's wider programme of investment in wastewater infrastructure across Northern Ireland, delivering environmental benefits while supporting future economic and community development.
