NI Water is finishing Water Saving Week (4th-8th May 2026) on a high with a successful partnership with Choice Housing which has promoted water conservation and empowered tenants, staff and partners to make positive changes.
Alongside Choice Housing’s Sustainability and Energy Strategy, both organisations reviewed water consumption in communal areas across Choice’s housing schemes, identifying opportunities to reduce usage and enhance efficiency.
As part of the redevelopment of Choice’s Head Office in Belfast, NI Water is also supporting Choice in their ambition to achieve the BREEAM Excellent standard. This includes advising on water saving measures that can be implemented to reduce future water consumption in the building.
Recently, Choice staff and tenants also received free NI Water waterbutts and other innovative water saving devices. One of these waterbutts is set to be installed at the Mersey Street housing scheme, where it will support local residents’ gardening and growing activities.
NI Water also joined Choice Housing to launch a new online Be Water Wise leaflet, which is packed with practical water saving tips and advice, along with contact details for further information and support.
Anna Killen, NI Water’s education officer, said: “We are pleased partner with Choice Housing as part of Water Saving Week to promote the importance of conserving water and protecting the environment. With each person using an average of 153 litres of water per day, every drop saved really does count so adopting simple water-saving habits at home and in the garden truly makes a real difference.”
Brian Rankin, Choice’s Sustainability and Energy Manager, said: “It has been great to be able to work with NI Water recently to get an idea of how much water may be used in communal parts of our buildings, and the ways in which we can reduce our impact on the environment and potentially save money.
“We are extremely grateful for the support from NI Water and the gifts of water saving devices, which will be put to good use! Water can be taken for granted, especially in NI where we see it so often! We would encourage everyone to think about the small everyday changes we can make to conserve this precious resource, our new water saving leaflet will provide some helpful ideas!”
