NI Water making great strides to wrap up £2.5 million pipeline improvements at Craigavon Bridge

A programme of improvements to safeguard Derry City’s water supply is progressing well with work currently ahead of schedule at Craigavon Bridge.

A new 300m long watermain has been installed on the bridge and a special protective wrap is currently being completed to protect new and existing assets against corrosion in the marine environment.

The pipeline improvements have been meticulously planned and executed by Farrans Glanua JV, utilising scaffolding and a barge anchored on the River Foyle.

This avoided the need for a lane closure on Craigavon Bridge, minimising disruption for motorists and maintaining two-way traffic flow during the construction works.

Thanks to the recent spell of good weather and with support from the Foyle Search and Rescue team, works have been progressing well and are on target for completion by the end of September.

The supervised barge and scaffolding arrangements provide unique access to Craigavon Bridge and recently NI Water’s project team was pleased to offer DfI engineers access to carry out a visual inspection of the city-centre structure, which is now over 90 years old.

The replacement of the watermain and the addition of a specialist protective wrapping system on all pipelines straddling the bridge will safeguard the security of supply to almost 35,000 properties in the city.

NI Water and its project team from Farrans Glanua and McAdam take this opportunity to thank motorists, city-centre stakeholders and those supporting the upgrades through health and safety or supply chain activities, as we progress towards completion of these works.

The team kindly asks all river users to exercise caution when passing the works at the Craigavon Bridge, as this is a live construction site with a barge operating on the river and scaffolding works being carried out above and alongside the water.

The current lane closure on the slip road from Victoria Road to the lower deck on Craigavon Bridge will be removed as soon as works have been completed and scaffolding removed.
