Prize-winners in a NI Water art competition are the inspiration behind a fearful foursome of new monsters in the fight against blocked sewers.
Sir Block A Lot, Blob the Fatberg, The Oily Oozer and The Clog King are the creations of pupils who were winners in NI Water’s colouring and poster competition that ran through the last school year.
The new monster-mash menagerie will join forces with NI Water’s wet wipes villain Wipezilla to haunt and harass our homes with the 3 Ps message that only pee, poo and (toilet) paper should be flushed down the toilet, and that FOG (fats, grease and oils) will quietly grow into disgusting demons under our feet. They will then burst out of the pipes to cause pollution, damage, smells and horribleness in our homes and communities.
NI Water’s education officer Anna Killen said: “There is no better time to unveil our new sewers monsters than Halloween and we are delighted that our competition prizewinners’ creepy creations will be used in the future to illustrate the harm that flushing rotten rogue items such as wet wipes, and pouring oils down the sink can do.
“Frightening fatbergs, awful oils and worrisome wet wipes are sewer monsters we create ourselves and that means by small changes in our behaviour, we can make sure they never form or grow into the scary sewer spectres they become – all beneath our feet. NI Water’s ‘Bin It’ campaign, names the items that should never be flushed, including wet wipes – even the ones that say they are flushable – and sanitary waste.
“We salute the winning pupils for their wonderful imaginations in creating this gang of four new monsters to help deliver these very important messages to help protect the sewer network and environment.”
