NI Water is reminding dog owners to keep their pets on leads following concerns about dogs being allowed off their leads at some of its public access sites, including Lough Mourne Reservoir in Carrickfergus.

We thank those visitors who do follow the rules and respect the shared space. Those who allow their dogs off lead are perhaps unaware that this can cause distress for others using walking routes, particularly people who are afraid of dogs or who need quieter, more predictable spaces.

Patricia McKee, NI Water’s senior facilities manager, said: “There are very important, practical reasons why dogs are not allowed off lead across NI Water sites. Many of these sites have grazing animals, local wildlife and important flora and fauna that can all be disturbed and potentially destroyed by an over-eager, off-lead dog. Pet owners may not be aware of the vulnerable ecosystems hiding among the grasslands. The rules aren’t there to stop a dog having fun on a walk; they are there so everyone can enjoy the shared space.

“We want everyone to be able to enjoy these beautiful places responsibly. By keeping dogs on leads, cleaning up after pets and being considerate of others, visitors can help protect wildlife, support local land users and make sure NI Water sites remain enjoyable and inclusive for all.”

Visitors are also encouraged to follow the Countryside Code and the Leave No Trace ethos when enjoying the outdoors.
