NI Water Urges Parents and Guardians to Help Keep Young People Safe Around Its Assets

08 July 2026 11:00

NI Water is appealing to parents and guardians to speak to children and young people about the serious health and safety risks associated with climbing on, or gathering around water and wastewater assets, following recent reports of anti-social behaviour at NI Water assets in Bangor.

During the recent good weather, young people have been seen climbing on operational infrastructure. This is extremely dangerous and could result in serious injury.

NI Water has reported the issue to the PSNI and is exploring what further measures may be appropriate to help protect public safety and deter anti-social behaviour.

NI Water’s Wastewater Area Manager Mark Consiglia said: “We understand that young people want to enjoy the good weather and spend time outdoors, but operational NI Water assets are not safe places to play, climb on or gather around.

“These are working sites and can contain hidden dangers. Climbing on or interfering with operational infrastructure can lead to serious injury and may also put essential services at risk.

“Health and safety is our priority. The message is clear, stay away from our sites, obey warning signs and keep a safe distance from any operational equipment, fences, barriers, chambers or manholes.

“We also recognise the concern this behaviour causes for nearby residents. We will continue to work with relevant parties as we consider appropriate options to deter anti-social behaviour and help keep people safe.

“Anyone witnessing anti-social behaviour or vandalism at NI Water sites should report it to Waterline on 03457 440088 or the PSNI on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. If there is an immediate risk to life or safety, always call 999.”
