NI Water is advising motorists that a phased road closure will be in place on Drumlough Road, Rathfriland towards the end of July for around 10 weeks as an essential upgrade of the local wastewater network continues.
The £1.6m investment is delivering a modern pumping station adjacent to Rathfriland Wastewater Treatment Works (located off Drumlough Road), with a new pipeline being laid along a section of Drumlough Road to connect the Sleepy Valley developments and allow an old pumping station there to be removed from the network.
Work on the new pumping station is already underway with pipelaying works scheduled to reach Drumlough Road week commencing Monday 27th July. Pipelaying will get underway adjacent to No.10 Drumlough Road and progress towards Sleepy Valley. The road closure will be undertaken in two phases to allow access to be maintained from either side of the working area.
A signed diversion will be in place via Iveagh Bungalows, Newry Road, Old Newry Road, Cullion Road, Bavan Road and Drumlough Road. Access to properties north of Sleepy Valley will be maintained via Newry Street/John Street, while properties to the south ofSleepy Valley and the working area will be accessed via Drumlough Road/Drumlough School Road throughout the work.
Andrew McMath, NI Water Senior Project Manager, said: "A significant programme of work is continuing in Rathfriland to upgrade the wastewater network in the Sleepy Valley area.
“This vital project will strengthen this part of the wastewater network and allow NI Water to remove the old Sleepy Valley pumping station which is nearing the end of its operational life. A programme of sewer relining, already completed in Sleepy Valley, will further enhance the performance of the network and reduce the risk of out of sewer flooding in the Sleepy Valley area.
