With summer exam season officially here and many students now starting their study leave, NI Water has some advice on an all important study companion to help boost focus, memory and overall wellbeing during exam time – water!

Staying hydrated with water is a simple and effective way to support health and enhance academic performance throughout the busy exam revision period when students need to focus on revision and final projects.

Water is essential for the body’s basic functions and survival. It keeps you hydrated, flushes out toxins while preserving vital nutrients, and makes up a significant portion of our blood. Water lubricates joints, aids digestion, and helps maintain smooth, healthy skin.

Anna Killen, NI Water’s Education Officer, shared: “Now that exams are underway and students are on study leave, many young people may notice dips in concentration and motivation. Proper hydration is vital – water not only sharpens your mind, but also reduces tiredness and muscle cramps, supports healthy skin, bones, and hair, and provides extra energy when it matters most.

“As part of NI Water’s ‘Water for Health’ campaign, we’re reminding students to stay hydrated and drink plenty of water during this challenging season. Even mild dehydration can cause fatigue and lower alertness, affecting activity levels and general wellbeing. We recommend aiming for 6-8 glasses each day. Water is fundamental to everyone’s health, so let’s make it a priority for self-care and peak performance.”
