On World Environment Day, NI Water is celebrating the incredible efforts of thousands of children, teachers, parents and families across Northern Ireland who are taking meaningful action for the planet through its wide-ranging schools programme.

Over the past year, NI Water’s education team has visited scores of nurseries and schools, engaging young people across the length and breadth of Northern Ireland. From St Coleman’s PS, Lisburn, St Davog’s PS, Belleek, St Francis PS in Lurgan, St John’s PS in Eglish, St Oliver Plunkett PS, Strathfoyle and Drumlins Integrated PS in Co Down, every county has taken part.

Through initiatives including H2O and the Wonderful World of Water, water conservation workshops, the Refillution, the ‘What Lies Beneath’ colouring competition and the ever-popular Wipezilla campaign, pupils are learning how to protect one of our most precious resources.

Children are proudly becoming junior scientists, discovering how water is treated, how it moves through the environment, and how small actions can make a big difference. From following the 3 Ps rule – only flushing pee, poo and paper – to using reusable water bottles and saving water at home and in school gardens, young people are leading real behavioural change.

Many schools are also making use of waterbutts donated by NI Water, helping to conserve rainwater while promoting outdoor learning.

NI Water’s Education Officer, Anna Killen, praised the collective effort:

“As this year’s World Environment Day theme, ‘Now for Climate’, calls for urgent action, NI Water applauds the dedication of schools and families who are helping to build a more sustainable future – proving that small steps taken together can make a lasting impact.

“NI Water places great importance on educating young people in the vital role water plays in our lives. It has been inspiring to see so many children becoming water-saving champions and sharing these messages with their families and communities.

“The Wonderful World of Water programme shows children how important water is for our health, environment and future. By learning simple habits, such as reducing water use and protecting our drains, young people are already playing a key role in tackling climate challenges. Well done to all the tots, children and young people who have taken up the mantle for conservation of our water resource.”
