Try A Little Toilet Tenderness This Valentine’s Day

NI Water is sending a special Valentine’s message this year for everyone to treat their toilet right and love their sewers.

Toilets and sewers have been in a long-term relationship as far back as any of us can remember, but their relationship status can get complicated when blockages happen – romance goes out the window and we endure the heartbreak of flooding in our loving homes.

To keep this enduring partnership healthy and happy, remember to woo your loo with the 3 Ps; poo, pee and paper and not to be tempted by flushing anything else like sanitary items and wipes down the toilet.

Angela Halpenny, Head of Environmental Regulation at NI Water said: “Many of our customers are forming a new-found respect for their sewers.  By changing their flushing habits, out of sewer pollution can be avoided, and that is the best thing they can do for romantic walks in the environment we all love.

“People often give a roving eye to wipes, sanitary items and cotton buds that claim to be flushable, but aren’t. They think a little flushing indiscretion couldn’t possibly do any harm, but it does. Like any relationship, it is easy to take it for granted, thinking the toilet will flush away anything that is put down it. But these cheating wipes and sanitary items are just creeping through the sewers gathering other wipes and eventually creating a blockage. All joking aside, this results in wastewater flooding out of manholes onto the street, over a field or into a river.

“We are really hopeful our customers will spice up their love for their loos this Valentine’s Day with flushing that’s asking for just a little respect.”
