NI Water is due to commence a programme of work on Victoria Street in Lurgan next week to improve the performance of the local wastewater network and bring about environmental and economic benefits.

The work – which is scheduled to get underway on 18th March – will see the installation of new stormwater infrastructure to allow rainwater to be removed from the combined wastewater network. This will help to ease the pressure on the system during periods of heavy rainfall, thereby reducing the risk of out-of-sewer flooding in the area. The addition of a dedicated stormwater pipeline will also provide some short-term capacity in the sewerage network to help support local development.

Speaking about the work and the associated traffic management requirements, Robert McLean, NI Water Senior Project Manager said:

“The work at Victoria Street in Lurgan forms part of NI Water’s multi‑million‑pound stormwater separation programme designed to reduce the risk of out of sewer flooding, improve environmental compliance, and free up vital capacity in the combined sewer network to support future housing and economic development in constrained areas across Northern Ireland.

“Approximately 185m of new pipe and six new manholes will be constructed as part of this latest stormwater separation project which is planned to start on Wednesday 18th March and will be completed by the end of May.

“Pipelaying will get underway adjacent to Dougher Cemetery and will progress along Victoria Street as far as the entrance to Woodville Street. Connections to existing infrastructure within Victoria Gardens will also form part of the work.

“To ensure the safety of the public and construction workers, a lane closure with traffic lights will be in place around any working areas. The lights will be manned at peak times to minimise delays.

“No work will take place on Easter Monday, Easter Tuesday and May Day, with traffic management removed on these dates if possible.

“Access to businesses on Victoria Street will be available throughout the work.

“NI Water and its project team from CivCo and AtkinsRéalis take this opportunity to thank residents, businesses and road users for their patience and cooperation while this essential work is carried out. The team will make every effort to complete the work in the shortest possible timeframe.”
