Work to Begin on University Street

01 November 2010 12:22

NI Water, as part of its Belfast Sewers Project, is about to commence permanent road carriageway reinstatement at University Street. This completes the sewer replacement work carried out in South Belfast in 2008.

To facilitate the reinstatement work, University Street will be closed to through traffic from its junction with Dudley Street down to the Ormeau Road. However, access will be maintained for residents and business owners.

This closure will be in operation for a period of two weeks from Wednesday 3rd November. Traffic travelling between Botanic Avenue and the Ormeau Road will be diverted to Donegall Pass. Diversionary signposting will be in place.

Bill Gowdy, NI Water’s Head of Wastewater Procurement, explained:

"This work is part of the programme of essential improvements to the sewage infrastructure that have been carried out in South Belfast as part of the Belfast Sewers Project.

"NI Water and its contractor, Dawson WAM McAllister Bros, are working closely with Roads Service to ensure that any disruption to local residents and businesses is kept to an absolute minimum while this essential work is carried out. We would like to thank the public in advance for their patience and assure them that we will do everything we can to complete the work as quickly as possible."

NI Water’s Belfast Sewers Project has provided Belfast with a modern and effective sewerage system capable of meeting the city’s existing and future development needs.
