Watermains upgrade to commence in Newry Area

02 December 2011 15:12

NI Water is pleased to announce that work will commence this month on our ongoing water mains improvement programme in Bessbrook, Meigh and the wider Newry area. This work represents an investment of approximately £12 million and will involve improving and upgrading the water supply infrastructure in the area. The work will get underway this month and will continue until Spring 2013.

DRD Minister Danny Kennedy said: “I welcome this major investment which will provide significant benefits for local residents and businesses including improved mains water supply and overall reliability of service.”

Bill Gowdy, Acting Director of Engineering Procurement at NI Water added:

“This work is good news for the local area, particularly over the winter months, as the upgraded water mains will dramatically improve the quality, reliability and flexibility of water supply, while also reducing leakage.
“NI Water’s existing infrastructure is aging and in certain areas, the system does not have the capacity to accommodate an increase in housing or development.”

This work will be completed in sections and traffic management including signage will be in place throughout this work. Further updates will be available once the scheme gets underway.

NI Water and our contractors Farrans and Lagans Construction will carry out letter drops in affected areas to advise residents of this work. We would like to thank the public in advance for their co-operation and patience during this essential improvement work. There may be some disruption and delays in the area at peak times during this work, but we would like to assure customers that every effort will be made to keep disruption to a minimum.

NI Water’s customer relations team can be contacted via Waterline on 08457 440088. Customers with any questions on the scheme should quote “Farrans Utilities Water Mains Rehabilitation Programme”.
