Watermains Upgrade Work on Cliftonville Road, Belfast

18 June 2012 11:39

NI Water is currently engaged in an ongoing process of improving and upgrading the water supply infrastructure in the Greater Belfast area. As part of this process, we wish to announce that work is due to commence on the installation of a new watermain on the Cliftonville Road on Monday 2nd July 2012. It is expected that this work will continue until early September 2012.

This work has been planned to take place over the summer months to reduce disruption on the roads as there will be less general and school traffic in the area. We have also invested in extra resources on the ground during this scheme to ensure that the majority of the work is completed over the summer months.

Once complete, this project will be good news for the local area as the upgraded watermains will improve the reliability and flexibility of water supply, drinking water quality and will also help reduce leakage.

The new main will be laid between the junction at the Antrim Road and the junction at the Oldpark Road in the country-bound carriageway. In order to ensure the safety of the travelling public and our contractors, it will be necessary to put in place a one-way traffic system for the duration of the works as agreed with DRD Roads Service.

Traffic wishing to travel towards the Antrim Road will continue as normal. However traffic wishing to travel towards Oldpark Road, will be diverted via Cavehill Road and Westland Road.

Please be aware that vehicles exiting side streets onto the city-bound carriageway of Cliftonville Road will be restricted to left turn only. There will be limited or restricted access for vehicles entering or exiting side streets on the country-bound carriageway of Cliftonville Road. It will also be necessary to restrict on-street parking, however pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.

During the works period, inbound Translink services will continue to operate as normal. However outbound services will be subject to diversions. For more information please contact the Translink Call Centre: 02890 666630.

NI Water and its contractor Farrans Construction have completed letter drops in affected areas to advise residents of this work. We would like to thank the residents and the traveling public in advance for their co-operation and patience during this essential improvement work. There may be increased traffic in the area which may result in some disruption while this work takes place, but we would like to assure customers that every effort will be made to keep it to a minimum. All diversions will be clearly signposted.

NI Water’s customer relations team can be contacted via Waterline on 08457 440088. Customers with any questions on the scheme should quote “Farrans Utilities Watermains Rehabilitation Programme – Cliftonville Road.”
