 | NI Water News

Held as part of NI Water’s Decade of Delivery events, local representatives saw first-hand how NI Water and Newry, Mourne & Down District Council are working in partnership by investing £3 million to make essential improvements at Camlough lake. This project will rehabilitate the reservoir to provide an enhanced recreational and tourism resource for the future.

This project has included strengthening the reservoir embankment to provide extra security in the event of heavy rainfall and the construction of a valve tower to control flows from the lake.

Ronan Larkin, Director of Finance & Regulation said:

“April 2017 marks a decade of delivery for NI Water, and to acknowledge the role the company plays in Northern Ireland, local representatives were invited to come along and see the construction progress at the reservoir, as part of a programme of site visits throughout Northern Ireland.

“We are delighted to be working in partnership with Newry, Mourne & Down District Council to complete this essential work, which is so important for the local community. Work is progressing well and we anticipate that all work will be completed by May 2017. We will continue to keep all our stakeholders informed as this project continues.”

Chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down Council, Councillor Gillian Fitzpatrick added:

“Newry, Mourne and Down District Council are very pleased with the progress to date on this project to enhance the lake as an important recreational resource for the future.

The wave wall and valve tower at the reservoir has been clad with locally sourced granite, which has helped to reduce costs and enhanced the look of the completed project and we are delighted that the work will be completed ahead of June’s popular Crooked Lake Triathalon event.

“I also commend all the Camlough Lake user groups for their input on this project to date and we look forward to continuing our successful partnership with NI Water as we move towards the completion of this project.”

Maghera-based BSG Civil Engineering is the main contractor on this project, with AECOM providing project management and technical support.
