NI Water’s CEO Sara Venning this week had the pleasure of meeting three young water dragons from Grosvenor Grammar School who won the special award prize sponsored by Future Water Association at ‘The Big Bang UK Young Scientists & Engineers Competition’ in Birmingham.

The students wowed the judges with their project entitled LifeBlock. The team created a concept to send aid to developing countries and countries that have experienced natural disasters, particularly flooding. Once the flooding has been contained, the Lifeblock can then be used to build suitable housing and other buildings.

Part of the overall prize was the opportunity to meet NI Water’s CEO, Sara Venning, to hear her thoughts on their project.  They were also given a tour of the water labs where they saw first-hand a range of tests being carried out on water samples taken from the customer tap, reservoirs and water treatment works.   The students will also receive a £500 cash prize for their school and a work experience day at NI Water.

The students were chosen from over 500 finalists from across the country. The Big Bang Competition is an annual contest designed to recognise and reward young people's achievements in all areas of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM), as well as helping them build skills and confidence in project-based work.

NI Water supports careers in the STEM industry as much of our business and indeed staff, relay on such skills in the day-to-day running of Northern Ireland’s most vital service. Many staff members are STEM ambassadors, actively engaging with the future workforce about the water industry and the range of opportunities NI Water has to offer.
