NI Water was delighted to recently welcome Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins on site to view the recent completion of 2 projects at Warrenpoint Wastewater Treatment Works (WwTW), totalling approximately £15 million over recent years.

An £8m upgrade was completed in September 2022 and the site previously benefitted from an INTERREG investment of £7m under the Shared Waters Enhancement & Loughs Legacy (SWELL) Project.

Infrastructure Minister, Liz Kimmins, said: “These upgrades are good news for people in Warrenpoint and the surrounding areas - including cross-border funding, £15 million in total has been invested to improve wastewater treatment. This will help facilitate new connections in the area, boosting housing growth and development as well as protecting the environment by improving water quality in Carlingford Lough.  NI Water is continuing to carry out significant improvements across the North and I look forward to seeing what else can be achieved in the time ahead.”

The state-of-the-art upgraded facility has three levels of wastewater treatment which has led to environmental improvements, such as enhanced water quality in Carlingford Lough.

Dr Sara Venning NI Water CEO added:

“We at NI Water were delighted to welcome Minister Kimmins to the site to view the recent upgrade work at Warrenpoint Wastewater Treatment Works, which will bring many improvements to wastewater services for our customers, as well as supporting local development and improving water quality in Carlingford Lough.

“This is a great example of recent investment in the delivery of essential new wastewater infrastructure, which will benefit the local community for many years to come.

“NI Water is committed to improving water and wastewater services across Northern Ireland, with our customers as always at the heart of everything we do. This commitment involves continued innovative thinking about how we allocate the resources at our disposal, whilst seeking to minimise the impact on the environment and maximising outcomes for customers.”

In December 2020, NI Water completed a £7m programme of work at Warrenpoint as part of the INTERREG EU-funded cross-border SWELL project, aimed at improving water quality in Carlingford Lough and Lough Foyle through the upgrade of strategic wastewater assets.

Building on the work undertaken through SWELL, NI Water seamlessly commenced a further multi-million-pound programme of work at Warrenpoint (Phase 2) to replace the remaining ageing assets on site and provide a third level of treatment, which incorporates a state-of-the-art UV treatment facility, to ensure the latest Northern Ireland Environment Agency standards could be met. Warrenpoint WwTW Phase 2 construction (value circa £8m) was completed in September 2022.

The civil construction for both phases of work at Warrenpoint WwTW were carried out by Coalisland-based GEDA Construction, with Newry-based Water Solutions Ireland undertaking the extensive mechanical and electrical installation at the site.
