Why save water in your business or organisation?

We get plenty of rain in Northern Ireland but this rainwater has to be cleaned at our treatment works before it goes into the taps. So the less water we waste the more cost effective the system is.

We all have a part to play to ensure there's enough water for everyone now and in the future.

In this section you will find tips, advice and simple ways you can save water in the bathroom, kitchen and garden and use our tips and pledges to find out how much water you could save.

Toilet and urinal flushing typically make up 63% of water use in businesses so improvements in the efficiency of plumbing devices will reduce the amount of water wasted significantly. Below are some ways of making your plumbing appliances more efficient.

Taps

  • Fix dripping taps
  • Fit tap aerators or spray heads
  • Fit push or infra red operated taps

WCs

  • Check that water is not running into the bowl between flushes
  • Check that overflows are not running
  • Replace older cisterns with smaller modern ones
  • Retrofit toilets with dual flush

Urinals

  • Adjust the time between flushes
  • Switch urinals off during periods of business closure
  • Use a motion sensor, urinals only flush when used e.g. not at night time
  • Waterless urinals are another option, they need maintenance

Showers

  • Fit push buttons to showers
  • Fit aerating shower heads
