Publication of Annual Report & Accounts

27 September 2011 9:20
Our Annual Report & Accounts is an invaluable source of information on NI Water. It highlights our responsibility for delivering a safe and efficient service to the people of Northern Ireland, at the best possible value for money.

This report sets out our performance during the first year of our three year regulatory Price Control period (PC10) ending on 31 March 2013. Our focus over this period remains on prioritising customers through improving how we deliver our service, operating more efficiently and investing in our infrastructure.

During 2010/11, NI Water delivered the highest drinking water quality and wastewater compliance ever recorded in Northern Ireland. This is a direct result of our investment programme which has exceeded £1.1 billion since our formation on 1 April 2007. These are some of the facts which can be found in the Annual Report published by the organisation today, 26 September 2011.

In presenting the report, Chairman, Seán Hogan said:

“We recognise that the past year has been very challenging for ourselves and our customers. The unprecedented freezing weather conditions in December 2010 followed by the rapid thaw resulted in widespread leakage of Water from the system. Around 20% of that leakage came from our own network with 80% coming from customers’ water pipes. We are taking on board the recommendations made by the Utility Regulator to improve our response in future, particularly in the areas of leadership and communication, and are currently working to have them implemented.”

“NI Water is delighted to report significant progress in delivering efficiencies in the business, contributing towards the delivery of increased profits for reinvestment in our infrastructure. The profit after tax of £80.5 million is £43.2m higher than 2009/10 primarily due to the transition to International Financial Reporting Standards but also as a result of continued focus on cost control. These efficiencies are benefiting our customers - we held increases in charges for non-domestic customers in 2011/12 to below inflation.”

“Based on these results, we paid a full dividend of £26million to our sole Shareholder, the Department of Regional Development (DRD). This represents excellent value for the Shareholder and ultimately the taxpayer.”

“We will continue to invest in our services, with £337m of investment planned over the remainder of the PC10 period. This investment is intended to deliver real benefits for our customers, our environment and our local economy.’’

Other highlights of our Annual Report & Accounts include the following:

Ӣ Continuing the transformation programme towards a modern, customer focussed, regulated Water utility company while operating within the constraints of our public ownership model;

Ӣ Reducing the operational cost efficiency gap between the leading English and Welsh Water companies;

”¢ Working to reduce our carbon footprint through participation in the UK Government’s mandatory Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) energy efficiency scheme aimed at improving energy efficiency; and

Ӣ Protecting our employees as seen in our UK industry leading health and safety performance.
