Musicans from the Ulster Fleadh are starting World Refill Day (16th June 2025) on a high note by drumming up support for NI Water’s Join the Refillution campaign.

By signing up, participants make a sound decision to take the NI Water Plastic Promise Pledge to always refill a reusable from the tap. In doing so they are helping beat plastic pollution and reducing the impact of single use plastics on the environment and marine life.

NI Water education officer Anna Killen said: “World Refill Day is an annual awareness campaign dedicated to reducing plastic waste by championing the refill and reuse revolution. By refilling a reusable bottle with tap water, musicans like those in the Ulster Fleadh are saying no to pointless plastics and also helping to drive down their carbon footprint as bottled water is 900 times more carbon intensive than tap water.”

Chair of Newry Mourne and Down District Council, Councillor Phillip Campbell, said: “The Council is delighted to support the Refillution campaign as part of our commitment to reducing single-use plastics and promoting sustainable choices. Refillable bottles are a small but powerful way we can all make a difference. Partnering with festivals like the Ulster Fleadh is a great way to raise the profile of these initiatives. We also encourage festivalgoers at Wake the Giant in Warrenpoint at the end of June to visit our Sustainability Stand, where they can pick up a free refillable bottle and learn more about what we’re doing to protect our local environment.”

Jimi Quinn, Chairperson, 2025 Ulster Fleadh, said: “The Uster Fleadh committee and some of the young musicians from Rinn Mhic Giolla Rua CCE /Warrenpoint Comhaltas were delighted to meet with the Refillution team from NI Water in Warrenpoint Municipal Park. The sponsorship of the refillution bottles for the 2025 Ulster Fleadh was a significant step in our drive to make the 2025 Ulster Fleadh a more sustainable event.  We are very grateful to NI Water for coming on board with us and we are delighted to help promote the Refillution campaign.”
