Our environment

Environmental Policy Statement 2026/27

NI Water exists to provide the water for life we all rely on to thrive. Our business is essential

to support a healthy and thriving population, a growing economy and a flourishing natural

environment. Our business is inherently circular: we abstract water from the natural environment to provide our customers with a vital resource, before taking away their wastewater, treating it and safely recycling the water back into the natural environment. Our ambition is that our services always contribute to a flourishing natural environment, as set out in Our Strategy 2021 - 2046. NI Water strives for continual improvement, and our externally certified ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS) supports our work to perform better, to support a flourishing natural environment and to work with key stakeholders to deliver our commitments.

Land Management

  • Committed to sustainable and responsible management of landholding and natural resources.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders and local communities to foster environmental awareness and stewardship.
  • Conserve and enhance biodiversity and prevent the spread of invasive non-native species.

Water & Wastewater

  • We will comply with our statutory and regulatory requirements.
  • Deliver great tasting, clean and safe drinking water to meet customer needs as set out in our Water Resource and Supply Resilience Plan.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to deliver Wastewater Regulation Reform. NI Water is committed to enhanced compliance visibility for regulators and customers.

Climate

  • NI Water will transition to a net zero, climate resilient business as set-out in our Climate Strategy.
  • We will develop our Climate Transition Plan and set carbon reduction targets to support this.
  • We are committed to carbon transparency and align with the recommendations of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures.
  • We will continue to explore opportunities for renewable energy.

Investment

  • We will ensure environmental issues are considered at early stages in the planning of new projects and maintenance programmes.
  • We will continue to source environmentally responsible suppliers of goods and services, working with them to reduce the amount of waste we produce.

Education

  • We will continue to encourage a greater understanding of and promote environmental issues.
  • We will continue our education programmes in the community, taking the value of water message to them including appropriate flushing and water efficiency campaigns.
  • We will develop environmental management skills and knowledge of our staff by in-house training.
